Can roof repairs be done in the rain in Fayetteville?

residential roof replacement near Fayetteville
In general roof repairs should not be completed in the rain, there are circumstances however which would require the job to be completed if the damage is severe to the home. Depending on the size of your roof a repair job/replacement job can take several days. If the weather forecast predicts a high chance of rain scheduled in the next day or two it may be a better option to wait till the storm passes (again depending on the severity of the leak and repairs required). There are many different kinds of roofing repair services that can be completed in less than 2 days if the repair is somewhat small and can be accessed easily. For a complete roof replacement we would need a very large crew to tear off the previous shingles and install the new roof in 2 days or less.
One of the main reasons why roofers do not usually complete repairs or installations in the rain is because it can be dangerous for our contractors while working on a slippery and wet roof. We work very hard to keep our employees and roofing contractors safe while they are on the job. There is a fine line however depending on the circumstance and weather since we do not want our customers' roof to be exposed to the rain while the damages have not been repaired. In the past some of our contractors were ok working in very light rain (a drizzle) to get the roof repaired quickly or lay a tarp over the damages so they can wait until the storm passes to complete the job. Not many people know this but when the roof is wet it becomes more difficult for shingles to adhere properly and nails to get a firm grip.
There are some cases when a wet roof could cause the shingles to fail and not adhere properly compared to if the installation took place during a sunny/cloudy day. Another reason shingles should not be installed while it is raining is the potential for moisture to enter the OSB boards and attic, this could potentially lead to mold growing between the wood and underlayment or rot in the support joists and boards. If the OSB boards have mold and moisture growing on it then there is much greater potential that the shingles become insecure and can rip out much easier if a large storm were to roll in.
Manufacturers warranties also only guarantee their product if the installation followed the guidelines and requirements. The manufacturer does not have to comply with their warranty if the shingles were installed incorrectly or during a rain storm for example. These companies have their guidelines and rules for roofing contractors that we must follow if the life expectancy is to be accurate. If your roofers in Fayetteville were to install a new roof in a rain storm it could cause the manufacturer to void any kind of warranties that were offered on the materials. This is just another reason why we do our best to plan around the weather and install/repair shingles when it is dry.
What if my roof is half finished when a rainstorm comes?
This is a valid question, there are no exact answers for each roofing company in the state but here are some things that we do. The first action we take is ensuring the safety of our roofers to make sure they do not slip or get injured. The next action we need to take is covering any bald spots that have not been covered with shingles. Large tarps can be secured to the roof which will protect the OSB boards and waterproof underlayment. Our roofers in Fayetteville make sure that these tarps are secured very well in case strong winds become an issue. Once we have covered any bald spots and secured the tarps we need to protect the roofing materials that are sitting on the driveway or property. We work quickly to cover the roofing materials with smaller tarps and then wait out the storm. Once the storm passes we will take off the tarps and resume work, getting the job done as efficiently as possible if another rain storm is threatening to come the next few days.
But what happens if my roof needs to be repaired while it's raining?
Like talked about previously in the article, there are instances where a roof will begin to leak during a rainstorm, there are also storms that may last for 5 days without any sunlight in view. In emergency situations our roofers can help protect the home during the rain storm but in most cases will not be able to actually repair the leak until the storm passes. We don’t want our roofers up on top of the home during a storm since it is not safe. The quickest and safest way to repair a roof in a rain storm is to nail a tarp or cover over the damaged area then wait till the storm passes. Once the storm passes we can begin the roof repair or provide an estimate for a roof replacement job if the roof has potential of leaking in other locations.
If the weather forecast suspects a large storm is coming and there is a good chance of rain we will postpone any roof replacement services until it has passed. If you know that a storm is coming through and want to make sure your roof is free of issues we do offer roof inspections near Fayetteville. Be sure to give us a call today!
